Barbara Stephens was a nightclub singer from Atlanta who, in the late 1950s, began touring with acts such as Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Brook Benton, Ruth Brown, Gladys Knight & the Pips, James Brown, Little Willie John, Jerry Lee Lewis, Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, The Dells, Jerry Butler, and Joe Tex, just to name a few. In 1961, she traveled to Memphis, Tennessee to record for Satellite Records, which later became Stax Records. After only two short years at the label and for irreconcilable differences, she parted ways with the company and severed all ties with the label.
