Gus Cannon
Gus Cannon was born near Red Banks, Mississippi in 1883 and is known as one of America’s premier jug band artists. As a child, he taught himself how to play music on a banjo that he made out of a frying pan and a raccoon skin. By the 1930s, Cannon’s Jug Stompers were already making records and were one of the most popular bands on Beale Street. Cannon recorded one album at Stax, “Walk Right In,” in 1963, and today it is one of the rarest albums the label ever released.
