Mel and Tim
Melvin McArthur Hardin and Hubert Timothy McPherson were cousins from Holly Springs, Mississippi who Gene Chandler of “Duke of Earl” fame discovered in Chicago in the 1960s. Soon after, they hit it big with their original song “Backfield in Motion” in 1969 on Bamboo Records. The song sold more than a million copies and was certified gold. The duo came to Stax in 1972 where they struck gold again with the hit “Starting All Over Again.”
