Terry Manning
Terry Manning showed up at Stax Records one day after leaving his home in Texas at age 15. He told Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton he was ready for work, and they obliged. He started sweeping floors, but soon he was engineering some of the most important records in history. Manning also became a session musician, most notably playing the marimba for the first time on Booker T. & the MGs’ “Soul Limbo.” Splitting his time between Stax and Ardent studios, Manning engineered, recorded and produced the likes of Otis Redding, Al Green, Ike & Tina Turner, the Staple Singers, and Johnnie Taylor. His one solo album at Stax, Home Sweet Home, started out as joke, but today, many critics hail its innovative rock style.
